Check-in at South Beach Casino & Resort opens at 4 pm. A room is only guaranteed to be ready by 6 pm, though. Check-out is at 12 noon the next day. Pets are not allowed, so plan for them before you leave home. The planner at the top of the page works from whatever arrival time you pick.
Across four types, the hotel offers 93 rooms and suites: 70 Deluxe Guest Rooms, 8 Luxury Guest Rooms, 5 Junior Suites and 10 Grand Suites. Supper hours
Mango's Restaurant, the sit-down restaurant at South Beach Casino & Resort, serves until 9 pm every day. The Palms Buffet opens to the public for dinner only on Friday and Saturday, from 4 to 9 pm. From Monday to Thursday it is closed to the public. Children can order from a kids' menu there.
Later, the Blue Dolphin Bar, with dine-in, drink and late-night menus, takes kitchen orders until midnight from Sunday to Thursday. On Friday and Saturday its kitchen runs until 1 am. South Beach Café, in the hotel lobby, never closes: coffee, muffins, sandwiches and drinks.

The floor after dark
The casino at South Beach Casino & Resort opens at 10 am and closes at 3 am, seven days a week. Holiday hours differ, so check them on southbeachcasino.ca before you go. More than 500 slot machines fill over 40,000 square feet, with stakes from 1 cent up to $5. Smoking is not allowed anywhere on the floor.
From Monday to Wednesday the live tables are closed; they deal Thursday through Sunday. Hours on Thursday and Friday are 5 pm to 2 am, on Saturday 4 pm to 2 am, and on Sunday 3 pm to 1 am. On offer: Texas Shootout, High Card Flush, Single-Zero Roulette and Double Deck Black Jack. Friday and Saturday nights bring local musicians to the Blue Dolphin Bar, with no cover charge.

The morning after
Starting at 7 am, the Tropical Pool welcomes all guests. Its features include a sauna, a hot tub and a cascading waterfall. On the previous evening, between 10 pm and 11 pm, only adults may use it. There is no lifeguard on duty, and an adult must accompany children under 12. The fitness centre is open around the clock.
Breakfast at Mango's runs from 8 to 11 am Monday to Friday and from 8 to 11:30 am on Saturday. On Sunday, Mango's opens at 11:30 am. The Palms Buffet serves breakfast on Saturday and Sunday from 8 to 11:30 am. Check-out is at 12 noon.
Highway 59
The lake and the land
Highway 59 runs past South Beach Casino & Resort north of Winnipeg, a short way from the shore of Lake Winnipeg. On the map, as the crow flies, Patricia Beach Provincial Park is 7.4 km off. Grand Beach Provincial Park comes to 23.1 km by the same measure, and the roads run longer than either line.
Seven First Nations share ownership of the resort, which stands on Brokenhead Ojibway Nation reserve land: Poplar River, Pauingassi, Little Grand Rapids, Hollow Water, Brokenhead, Bloodvein and Black River. Opened on May 28, 2005, it describes itself as a Manitoba Star Attraction.

Joining the Ocean Club, the players club at South Beach Casino & Resort, costs nothing. Cards are issued right at the Ocean Club desk once valid ID is shown. Points come from slot play; 400 of them convert to $1 in Beach Bucks, and after 12 months with no activity they expire. Membership is a condition of every stay package, and packages are booked by phone at 1-877-775-8259.

Online gambling in Manitoba
South Beach Casino & Resort is a land-based resort, and none of its pages names an online casino. In Manitoba, the Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Authority (LGCA) regulates gaming. By the regulator's own statement, PlayNow.com, run by Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries, holds the province's single gambling site licence. Its caution to Manitobans is that most gambling sites aimed at them sit outside Manitoba regulation. An ad for a site does not make that site legal.

- The live tables stay closed on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. They deal Thursday to Sunday, while the slots run from 10 am to 3 am every day.

- The Tropical Pool is open to all guests until 10 pm, then to adults only from 10 pm to 11 pm. No lifeguard is on duty.
- How old do you have to be for the casino?
